What makes Ikkat and Gadwal silk sarees so attractive?

Saree has been an ever-present part of Indian clothing. However, fashion has also affected the saree style, and it has gone through some intense makeover. Saree is the favourite clothing in not only the Indian subcontinent but also in the west. Bollywood and Hollywood celebrities are often seen draping a saree.

Indian women have a special bonding with the silk sarees. They are known for their lustrous and incomprehensible beauty. From weddings to any formal event, silk sarees feature prominently.

There is, however, a misconception regarding the styles of saree. Each region in the Indian subcontinent has their unique form by which they manufacture saree. The five styles are- Central, Eastern, Western, Southern and Northern. Two of the most popular sarees from Eastern and Southern styles are- Ikkat silk sarees from Odissa and Gadwal sarees from Telangana.

The Gadwal sarees are from Gadwal, Telangana. Their most notable feature is the zari which is provided on them. The lightweight of these sarees is what makes them a prominent option for the buyers. Gadwal sarees come with well-crafted kuttu borders and pallus. A unique feature of these sarees is the beautiful cotton field which gets weaved separately and later interlocked with the boundaries. The pallu is made of pure silk.

The other sarees are the Ikkat sarees. They take their name from the Ikkat dying technique which is used to pattern textiles that employ resist dyeing on the yarns before dying and weaving the fabric. The distinctive characteristic of the ikkat pattu sarees is the apparent blurriness of the design. They are 100% pure silk saree made up of handloom giving them a subtle texture. The price of these sarees lies in the range of around 4,000 to 15,000.
