How to Spot A Genuine Silk Saree?

The western clothes are continuously taking control over the fashion market. That’s because of their growing popularity and convenience. But, in India sarees are still the most popular clothing when it comes to women’s fashion. Every Indian woman at least once wears a saree in her lifetime.

Sarees are the prestige of India which is worn on almost every occasion celebrated in the country. Sarees are available in several different fabrics and designs. But, the most popular of all is, of course, a silk saree. From banarasi sarees to gadwal sarees, silk sarees are the evergreen trend in India.
Since the demand for silk sarees are increasing continuously, many of the retailers are selling duplicate silk sarees. Hence, it’s important to take some precautions. So, here are some ways to identify that the silk saree you are going to buy is original or not.

Price

It’s good to buy some things at a low price. However, low cost isn’t an indication of quality. If someone is giving you a silk saree at a very low price, then there is a huge possibility that it’s fake. Generally, silk is ten times more expensive the synthetic yarn or duplicate silk. So, if someone is giving you an ikkat silk saree or any other silk at an extremely low price, then be double sure before buying that saree.

Ring Test

Another way of identifying a genuine silk saree is by pulling it through a wedding ring. Since pure silk is smooth and flexible, it can easily pass through a wedding ring. On the other hand, the synthetic fiber will not pass through a wedding ring. But, remember that this test is for fine silk sarees that are not too much heavy.

Burning Test

This is the most effective test of identifying pure silk. Just ask the salesperson to give you a silk thread out of your silk saree and burn it. Original silk will burn with an invisible flame and produce a smell of burning hair. Also, it will leave black powdered ash after burning. On the other hand, synthetic fiber will produce black smoke on burning and smell like burning plastic.

These tests will help you in getting value for money. But, if you want to get the original silk sarees, then I would recommend you only to buy the silk sarees from a good retailer.
